When I reflect on the beauty of our salvation in Jesus Christ, I’m reminded of a powerful story shared by former NFL athlete Tim Tebow. It’s a modern-day picture of grace that beautifully illustrates our spiritual adoption into the family of God.

A young girl had received a speeding ticket and was summoned to appear in court. Standing before the judge, she was given two choices: pay the fine or serve jail time. Admitting her guilt, she chose to pay the fine. What happened next was astonishing.

The judge firmly struck his gavel, removed his robe, stepped down from the bench, and paid the fine himself.

At first, this act seems unbelievable—why would a judge pay someone else’s penalty? But then came the reveal: the judge was also her father.

In that moment, he upheld justice and extended love. He did not ignore the law; he fulfilled it on her behalf.

And isn’t that exactly what our Heavenly Father has done for us?

“See what an incredible quality of love the Father has shown to us, that we would be named and called and counted the children of God! And so we are!” — 1 John 3:1 (AMP)

God: Our Just Judge and Loving Father

Just like that earthly judge, God is perfectly just. Our sins carried a penalty that demanded payment. But in His incredible love, God stepped down—through Jesus Christ—and paid the price Himself. He didn’t overlook our guilt; He satisfied justice with mercy.

Through salvation, we are not only forgiven—we are adopted.

“The Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’” — Romans 8:15 (NIV)

This is more than just religion. It’s relationship. We are not merely pardoned criminals—we are welcomed children.

A Father to the Fatherless

In a world where fatherlessness is on the rise, the message of spiritual adoption is more important than ever. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 17.8 million children in America—nearly 1 in 4—live without a father in the home. That’s enough to fill the largest U.S. cities multiple times over.

The absence of a father deeply affects a child’s emotional, social, and spiritual development. No wonder this generation is often referred to as The Fatherless Generation.

But I believe the Church can change that.

How We Can Reflect the Father’s Heart

Not everyone may be called to adopt physically—but every believer is called to reflect the Father’s love spiritually. So how can we make a difference?

  • Pray intentionally for the next generation.

  • Speak identity and hope into young people who feel abandoned or unseen.

  • Mentor, serve, support single parents and at-risk youth.

  • Share the message of spiritual adoption through Christ.

Before we take action, let’s begin with prayer. Ask God to reveal His fatherly heart to this generation. Pray that they would encounter the Spirit of adoption and know that they are deeply loved, chosen, and never alone.

Adoption: More Than Just Theology

I’ll leave you with this profound statement from J.I. Packer:

“To be right with God the Judge is a great thing, but to be loved and cared for by God the Father is greater.”

Justification sets us free from guilt. Adoption welcomes us home.

Friend, if you belong to Jesus—not only are your sins forgiven. You are family.

Walk confidently in your identity as a child of God.
